Coltraneの楽曲を取り上げている以外はすべてDeJohnette自身によるコンポーズ。かなりフリー寄りな楽曲もありますが、音場に飛散する各パートが繰り出すサウンドの奥行きと定位感が半端なく、まるで目の前で演奏が繰り広げられているような凄まじい臨場感。ホーンとストリングスのアンサンブルが美しく響き渡るB1、ピースフルなエネルギーに満ち溢れた珠玉のアレンジによるB2が大変素晴らしいです。どちらもColtraneのカバー。ECM15周年を記念して1985年にポリドールの＜ECM Symphony OrchestraをChristopher Keene が指揮し、Jarrett自身がピアノを演奏し、1980年3月にニューヨークのCarnegie Hallで録音された音源を収録。オーケストラ、打楽器、ピアノのための書かれた大規模作品で、Jarrettのカタログのなかでもかなり異色かつ重要な一作。背景としてJarrettは1976年にDeutsche Grammophonから、ボストン交響楽団と小澤征爾のための委嘱の依頼を受け、この曲を書き始めましたが、ジャズ的な即興を前面に出す協奏曲ではなく、約200ページに及ぶほぼ全面的に書き込まれた40分規模の作品であったため、依頼者側との間に認識のずれが生じ、最終的にその初演計画は流れてしまい、結局JarrettとManfred EicherがECMで自ら録音する形に至ったと言われています。通常のオーケストラ作品でもなく即興要素の強いジャズでもない、独自の精神世界をもった傑作です。本作はNEW SERIESに先駆けること4年前の発表ですが、Eicherがその後にNEW SERIESをはじめる原点のひとつとも言えます。・\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA1: \u003ca Grammophonから、ボストン交響楽団と小澤征爾のための委嘱の依頼を受け、この曲を書き始めましたが、ジャズ的な即興を前面に出す協奏曲ではなく、約200ページに及ぶほぼ全面的に書き込まれた40分規模の作品であったため、依頼者側との間に認識のずれが生じ、最終的にその初演計画は流れてしまい、結局JarrettとManfred
