This album was released in 1984. The album features John Purcell(as,ss), David Murray(ts), Howard Johnson(tuba,bs), and Rufus Reid(b). It was recorded as a memorial to his mother, who passed away in the same year, and is distinguished from his other works by its contemporary sublimation of his roots in Dixieland jazz and other early jazz styles. Thelonious Monk's classic "Monk's Mood" also features an exquisite brass section and synthesizer ensemble. The recording captures his performance at the Jazz-Hus Montmartre Festival held in Copenhagen in 1969. Featuring powerful attacks, clear resonance, and the repetition of minimalist phrases reminiscent of African folk music, the melodies soar with soul and spirit—showcasing Brand at his finest in a deeply soulful solo performance throughout the album. This 1980 leader album features a quartet with David Murray (ts, b-cn), Arthur Blythe (as), and Peter Warren (b, cello). Aside from two John Coltrane compositions on side B, all tracks are DeJohnette’s own works. While some pieces lean toward the freer side of jazz, the spatial depth and precision of each instrument’s placement in the sound field are extraordinary—creating a powerful sense of presence, as if the performance were unfolding right before your eyes. The beautiful horn and string ensemble on B1 and the radiant, peace-filled arrangement on B2—both Coltrane covers—are particularly outstanding. This Japanese edition was released in 1985 by Polydor as part of the ECM The Highest Quality series to commemorate ECM’s 15th anniversary.

<span style="color: rgb(51, 50, 50); It is a large-scale work written for orchestra, percussion, and piano, making it a rather unique and important piece in Jarrett's catalog. In 1976, Jarrett was commissioned by Deutsche Grammophon to write a piece for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Seiji Ozawa. He began composing this work, but instead of a concerto that heavily featured jazz improvisation, it was a fully written piece of about 200 pages and 40 minutes in length. This led to a misunderstanding between Jarrett and the commissioner, and ultimately, the premiere plans fell through. It is said that Jarrett and Manfred Eicher eventually recorded it themselves on ECM. It is a masterpiece with its own spiritual world, neither a typical orchestral work nor jazz with strong improvisational elements. Although this work was released four years before the NEW SERIES, it can be considered one of the origins that led Eicher to later launch the NEW SERIES.・

A1: First Movement
B2: Third Movement

Lester Bowie
Avant Pop
ECM Records (Germany) 1986
ECM 1326 (LP) Original pressing.
sleeve : EX(light wear on corner.)
media : EX/EX(some slightly noise)

Trumpeter Lester Bowie of the Art Ensemble of Chicago—one of the definitive groups of Afrocentric avant-jazz—released this striking leader album on ECM in 1986. Commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the piece was composed for the New World Festivalheld in Miami in 1982. This ambitious chamber music work features a septet ensemble comprising Ida Kavafian (violin), Theodore Arm (violin), Steven Tenenbom (viola), Fred Sherry (cello), Steve Kajala (flute), and Peter Gordon (French horn), presenting a modern classical approach that showcases Corea’s exploratory spirit. Produced by Corea himself with the support of Manfred Eicher, the album was released on ECM and, according to Corea, reflects their collaborative vision. An ideal entry point for discovering chamber music through the ECM lens, this recording comes highly recommended. With the exception of A4, all of the pieces were composed by Towner. Throughout the album, Towner’s delicate classical and 12-string acoustic guitar work blends beautifully with the clear yet richly resonant tones of Burton’s vibraphone and marimba, creating a succession of vivid and evocative musical landscapes. A1 and A2 establish a spiritual world strongly oriented toward Eastern traditions, while A3 transforms compositions by Ornette Coleman and Stevie Wonder through a richly multinational, folk-inflected approach. B1 is a wonderfully uplifting piece featuring Vasconcelos’ berimbau and vocals from all three members, while the cosmic B2 is utterly mesmerizing, as the distinctive timbres of their instruments resonate and merge. Although each musician’s individual character remains clearly defined, their sounds never clash, instead achieving a complete and effortless harmony.
