This album was released in 1984. The album features John Purcell(as,ss), David Murray(ts), Howard Johnson(tuba,bs), and Rufus Reid(b). It was recorded as a memorial to his mother, who passed away in the same year, and is distinguished from his other works by its contemporary sublimation of his roots in Dixieland jazz and other early jazz styles. Thelonious Monk's classic "Monk's Mood" also features an exquisite brass section and synthesizer ensemble. The recording captures his performance at the Jazz-Hus Montmartre Festival held in Copenhagen in 1969. Featuring powerful attacks, clear resonance, and the repetition of minimalist phrases reminiscent of African folk music, the melodies soar with soul and spirit—showcasing Brand at his finest in a deeply soulful solo performance throughout the album. This 1980 leader album features a quartet with David Murray (ts, b-cn), Arthur Blythe (as), and Peter Warren (b, cello). Aside from two John Coltrane compositions on side B, all tracks are DeJohnette’s own works. While some pieces lean toward the freer side of jazz, the spatial depth and precision of each instrument’s placement in the sound field are extraordinary—creating a powerful sense of presence, as if the performance were unfolding right before your eyes. The beautiful horn and string ensemble on B1 and the radiant, peace-filled arrangement on B2—both Coltrane covers—are particularly outstanding. This Japanese edition was released in 1985 by Polydor as part of the ECM The Highest Quality series to commemorate ECM’s 15th anniversary.

<span style="color: rgb(51, 50, 50); It is a large-scale work written for orchestra, percussion, and piano, making it a rather unique and important piece in Jarrett's catalog. In 1976, Jarrett was commissioned by Deutsche Grammophon to write a piece for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Seiji Ozawa. He began composing this work, but instead of a concerto that heavily featured jazz improvisation, it was a fully written piece of about 200 pages and 40 minutes in length. This led to a misunderstanding between Jarrett and the commissioner, and ultimately, the premiere plans fell through. It is said that Jarrett and Manfred Eicher eventually recorded it themselves on ECM. It is a masterpiece with its own spiritual world, neither a typical orchestral work nor jazz with strong improvisational elements. Although this work was released four years before the NEW SERIES, it can be considered one of the origins that led Eicher to later launch the NEW SERIES.・

A1: First Movement
B2: Third Movement

Lester Bowie
Avant Pop
ECM Records (Germany) 1986
ECM 1326 (LP) Original pressing.
sleeve : EX(light wear on corner.)
media : EX/EX(some slightly noise)

Trumpeter Lester Bowie of the Art Ensemble of Chicago—one of the definitive groups of Afrocentric avant-jazz—released this striking leader album on ECM in 1986. Commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the piece was composed for the New World Festivalheld in Miami in 1982. This ambitious chamber music work features a septet ensemble comprising Ida Kavafian (violin), Theodore Arm (violin), Steven Tenenbom (viola), Fred Sherry (cello), Steve Kajala (flute), and Peter Gordon (French horn), presenting a modern classical approach that showcases Corea’s exploratory spirit. Produced by Corea himself with the support of Manfred Eicher, the album was released on ECM and, according to Corea, reflects their collaborative vision. An ideal entry point for discovering chamber music through the ECM lens, this recording comes highly recommended. A1 and A2 establish a spiritual world strongly oriented toward Eastern traditions, while A3 transforms compositions by Ornette Coleman and Stevie Wonder through a richly multinational, folk-inflected approach. B1 is a wonderfully uplifting piece featuring Vasconcelos’ berimbau and vocals from all three members, while the cosmic B2 is utterly mesmerizing, as the distinctive timbres of their instruments resonate and merge. Although his music ranges widely from modal jazz to contemporary and free improvisation, his distinctive tone and memorable melodic phrasing remain unmistakable. Rava leads a quartet featuring Roswell Rudd on trombone, J.-F. Jenny-Clark on bass, and Aldo Romano on drums. A1 begins with one of Rava’s characteristically warm and melancholy-filled melodies before developing in a more experimental direction, while B1 races forward with a cool, hard-boiled atmosphere reminiscent of the soundtrack to a detective film. Garbarek’s crystalline soprano saxophone blends beautifully with Gismonti’s delicate acoustic guitar and Haden’s warm bass, creating exquisite music that evokes the deep forests of Northern Europe. After graduating from Harvard University, Kuhn attended the Lenox School of Jazz, where he interacted with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and others and absorbed the innovations of the emerging new jazz. He later came to prominence through his work with Kenny Dorham and John Coltrane.
Recorded at a New York studio in 1974, the album features a quartet with Steve Swallow on electric bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Sue Evans on percussion. Kuhn makes extensive use of electric piano as well as acoustic piano, developing a masterpiece that ranges from ecstatic contemporary jazz—almost as though offering his own response to Chick Corea’s Return to Forever—to crossover fusion. Kuhn’s fluid, soaring playing is perfectly matched by the mellow tone of the electric piano. Highly recommended. Active since the 1950s, Bley performed with the Ornette Coleman Quartet and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, while also leaving behind numerous masterpieces with his own groups. Alongside two of his own compositions, Bley interprets pieces by his former wife Carla Bley and Annette Peacock, both of whose music he would revisit on many subsequent recordings. The result is a superb solo performance permeated throughout by the singular emotional sensibility that defines his playing. The entire album is excellent, but A2 is particularly captivating: an emotionally rich interpretation of “Ida Lupino,” also featured on Carla Bley’s classic Dinner Music. Equally compelling is B1, which Bley later revisited with a group on the 1986 album Fragment. Japanese pressing released as part of the Trio Jazz Mania series.

A2: Ida Lupino
B1: Open, to Love

Miroslav Vitous
Emergence
ECM Records (Germany) 1986
ECM 1312 (LP) Original pressing.
sleeve : VG+(dirts)
media : EX+/EX+(some slightly noise)

Released on ECM in 1986, this solo album is by Czech-born virtuoso jazz bassist Miroslav Vitous, whose exceptional technique and talent were showcased through his work with Weather Report and in numerous other sessions. Recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York in March 1980, the work features Jarrett himself on piano with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christopher Keene. Written for orchestra, percussion, and piano, it is a large-scale composition and remains one of the most unusual yet significant works in Jarrett’s catalogue.
The background to the piece dates back to 1976, when Jarrett received a commission from Deutsche Grammophon to compose a work for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Seiji Ozawa. Rather than writing a concerto centered on jazz improvisation, however, Jarrett produced an almost entirely through-composed work lasting approximately forty minutes and extending to nearly two hundred pages of score. This reportedly created a fundamental difference in expectations between the composer and those who had commissioned the work, and the original premiere was ultimately abandoned. Jarrett and Manfred Eicher eventually took it upon themselves to record the piece for ECM. Neither a conventional orchestral composition nor jazz dominated by improvisation, this is a masterpiece possessing a unique and deeply personal spiritual world. Although released four years before the launch of ECM New Series, it may also be regarded as one of the works that laid the foundations for Eicher’s later establishment of the series. A truly beautiful masterpiece, featuring the soft, lustrous tones of Metheny’s fifteen-string harp guitar, Mays’s flowing piano, and Weber’s bass, which seems to send melodies sparkling into the air. The overflowing beauty of B4 shares a kindred spirituality with the music of Egberto Gismonti and could even be described as ambient jazz far ahead of its time. The album also contains clear signs of the distinctive sound that would later come into full bloom with the Pat Metheny Group. The trio grew out of the two acclaimed albums Standards, Vol. 1 and Standards, Vol. 2, and this recording documents their 1985 concert at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, France. From A1, a standard also featured in Miles Davis’s repertoire, to B3, composed by Nat Adderley and also known through performances by Cannonball Adderley and others, the album offers a series of exquisite performances in which the trio transforms familiar jazz standards into something even more dramatic and expressive.
