Released in 1983, this album documents a live performance from The New Jazz Meeting held in Baden-Baden, Germany in 1982, featuring five remarkable vocal improvisers: Lauren Newton, Urszula Dudziak, Jeanne Lee, Jay Clayton, and American singer Bobby McFerrin. Side A presents five a cappella pieces, each based on original scores by the participating vocalists. On Side B, they are joined by an exceptional ensemble of instrumentalists: Rainer Brüninghaus, Werner Pirchner, Barre Phillips, and Joe Chambers, all of whom have released outstanding work on ECM and related circles. The program includes compositions by Brüninghaus and Michal Urbaniak, Dudziak’s husband, as well as collectively composed pieces by the ensemble members. A truly wonderful album, filled throughout with astonishingly magical voice work and richly imaginative vocal interplay. Highly recommended.
