This is the third volume in Wambach’s series devoted to Klavierstücke, the long-running cycle of piano works composed over many years by Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of the central figures of German contemporary music. This volume features Klavierstück XI, composed in 1956, and Klavierstück XIII, composed in 1981. The works are based on cyclical structures in which parameters such as the number, register, direction, and duration of notes are organized through predetermined serial sequences. Klavierstück XI consists of 19 fragments spread across a single large page, with the performer beginning from any chosen fragment and moving freely from one to another until a fragment is encountered for the third time, at which point the performance ends. Klavierstück XIII was originally conceived as a piano work before being incorporated into a scene from Stockhausen’s opera Samstag aus Licht. Five layers of sound are organized contrapuntally, and the performance extends beyond conventional piano playing to include spoken passages and even what sounds like whistling. Compared with the more austere atonal language of Stockhausen’s serial period, these pieces display a striking degree of musical inflection and dramatic movement. A fascinating recording and well worth hearing.

A: Klavierstuck XI
B: Klavierstuck XIII

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0511/8073/2616/files/IMG_4385_8a074000-cf44-4e57-b32d-dafe6ad766ab.jpg?v=1788324910
