The album documents a 1981 performance at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco with a nine-piece ensemble featuring Michael Mantler on trumpet, Tony Dagradi on tenor saxophone, Steve Swallow on bass, and others. This is superb contemporary big-band jazz, transforming the respect for early jazz that had increasingly characterized Bley’s music since the late 1970s through her singular compositional vision. Her gospel-like organ playing on A2 and B3 is also outstanding.
