A large-scale jazz-orchestra work featuring many of Haden’s longtime associates, including Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Michael Mantler, and Dewey Redman. The big-band arrangements draw upon Spanish musical traditions such as tango and flamenco, creating a truly magnificent sound. Highlights include the title track A2, whose deeply nostalgic, gypsy-inflected atmosphere resonates straight to the heart, and B2, where a sense of melancholy fills the space even as the music unfolds freely. Charlie Haden’s bass solo in the latter half of B2 is profoundly spiritual.
