Etoile de Dakar, a group from Dakar, Senegal, formed by Youssou N'Dour and Babou N'Diaye in 1977, recorded a live performance at a nightclub in Dakar in 1979. This album was released in 1980. This is a reissue from Popular Afrian Music, a German label that has released famous albums by Philip bane and Sona Diabate. The album is full of originality, warm and energetic, with a mixture of indigenous Senegalese music influenced by Cuban music and developed independently, Afro grooves with bright horns and psychedelics with the introduction of electronic instruments such as electric guitar. The performance is energetic, yet warm and original. The bouncy beat of the talking drums is also a nice touch. Although it is a mono recording, it gives a sense of realism and matches the musicianship, making it a very enjoyable work. Highly recommended.
