The recordings were made in 1980 at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, Germany, a studio favored by ECM. Highlights include the moody tango-jazz piece A1 composed by Carla Bley, also featured on her 1981 album Social Studies; A2 and B3, composed by Burton's longtime collaborator Chick Corea; and B1, a piece originally performed on Mick Goodrick's 1979 ECM masterpiece In Pas(s)ing.
