The free jazz moments are excellent, such as A1, which moves from piano clusters and sharply attacked phrases into a thrilling development. But what truly stands out are the deeply expressive numbers shaped by the two musicians’ unmistakable melodic sensibility: A2, a beautifully restrained gospel song; A3, where piano and flute sing out in unison; and B3, with Adams’ full-bodied, lustrous saxophone blowing over Pullen’s light, bouncing piano lines.
