The group features a formidable lineup including John Purcell (fl, as), Baikida Carroll (tp), Chico Freeman (b-cl, ts), and Rufus Reid (b). A superb set ranging from tightly wound, high-velocity avant-garde jazz to the gently grooving contemporary jazz of A2, with its abstract, painterly atmosphere reminiscent of Eberhard Weber. The real standout, however, is B2, a reggae tune featuring DeJohnette on vocals and clavinet. Among the vast ECM catalogue, there may be no other record that ventures this deeply into full-fledged reggae. Highly recommended for DJs.
