The lineup features John Purcell on alto and soprano saxophones, David Murray on tenor saxophone, Howard Johnson on tuba and baritone saxophone, and Rufus Reid on bass. Recorded as a tribute to DeJohnette’s mother, who passed away that same year, the album stands apart from much of his other work by drawing upon his own roots in Dixieland and other forms of early jazz, reimagined through a distinctly contemporary approach. The interpretation of Thelonious Monk’s classic “Monk’s Mood” is especially striking, with the brass section and synthesizer creating a beautifully balanced ensemble sound. B1, dedicated to DeJohnette’s father, takes a more colorful direction through the extensive use of drum machine and synthesizer.
