The program features Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Nr. 9 Zyklus,” Edgar Varèse’s “Ionisation,” Carlos Chávez’s “Toccata,” and Shinichi Matsushita’s “Canzona Da Sonare No. 1,” with outstanding performances by leading figures in Japanese contemporary music such as Shinichi Matsushita, Yuji Takahashi, and Yasunobu Yamaguchi. Edgar Varèse’s “Ionisation,” in which the sounds of various percussion instruments scatter sharply through the space, is especially recommended. High-quality cutting was done using the Neumann SX 68 cutting machine employed by CBS\/Sony at the time.
