Opening with cymbals and electric piano drifting through a field of silence, A1 suddenly blossoms into an expansive groove driven by DeJohnette’s open-ended drumming and Jarrett’s psychedelic electric-piano tones. A2 moves from an elegant interplay of piano and ethnic percussion into a latter half where an earthy flute melody takes flight, while B2 features similarly organic flute lines over taut, sharply defined percussion. A landmark work that anticipated the organic, ethnically inflected sound both musicians would continue to explore. DeJohnette’s endlessly inventive drumming and percussion are especially outstanding.
