Side A features an approximately sixteen-and-a-half-minute electroacoustic work for sixteen voices and electronic sound, created between 1962 and 1963 at the electronic music studios of Yale University and the University of Illinois. The piece explores the transformation of language into pure sound by breaking it down to the level of individual phonemes. B1 is a tape composition combining musique concrète with electronically generated sounds, while B2 collages live performances on piccolo, bass trombone, and double bass with taped voices. Rather than relying primarily on electronic oscillators or conventional electronic instruments, these pieces construct their sound worlds through the manipulation, layering, and transformation of voices, acoustic instruments, and tape.
