Featuring Don Cherry on trumpet, Carla Bley on piano, and Jack Bruce on vocals and bass, the work was created around a passage from Irish writer Samuel Beckett’s novel How It Is. It opens with Bley’s piano and a solemn, majestic chorus, then unfolds dramatically around Bruce’s spoken recitation. A masterpiece distinguished by its compelling, narrative-driven approach. Cherry’s trumpet playing is deeply emotional as well.
