As with the Black Saint album, it expresses both their profound respect for Coleman and the quartet’s own musical identity at the time. Based on traditional music from Ghana, A2 is superb Afro-jazz, with Cherry and Redman playing an African-inflected melody in unison over Blackwell’s deeply rooted drum and percussion rhythms. A3, naturally composed by Cherry, is wonderful ethnic jazz distinguished by his beautifully nostalgic trumpet playing. Redman’s B2 enters an especially deep realm, fusing the spirit inherited from Ornette with traditional ethnic music.
