Alongside a pastoral style that sublimates his country and folk roots, the album presents an exceptionally deep strain of inner-cosmic music, even among Metheny’s many works. Its world of silence recalls Northern Song, the masterpiece by American guitarist Steve Tibbetts, who also released recordings on ECM. Simply wonderful.
