Alongside keyboardist Lyle Mays and drummer Dan Gottlieb, both of whom would later join the Pat Metheny Group, the album also features the extraordinary German bassist Eberhard Weber. Metheny’s softly played, lustrous 15-string harp guitar, Mays’ flowing piano, and Weber’s buoyant, highly melodic bass lines blend together with breathtaking beauty. The overflowing, radiant sound of B4 in particular suggests a spiritual affinity with Egberto Gismonti and could almost be described as ambient jazz ahead of its time.
