The performances are by The Brazilian String Quartet, consisting of Jaques Nirenberg (violin), Santino Parpinelli (violin), Henrique Nirenberg (viola), and Eugen Ranevsky (cello). Side A features Villa-Lobos’ four-movement Quartet No. 17, while Side B contains Nepomuceno’s Quartet No. 3 in D Minor, “Brasileiro”, also in four movements. Villa-Lobos’ work is distinguished by a uniquely Brazilian sense of nostalgia that permeates every corner of the melodies, while Nepomuceno’s piece reveals a more European Romantic sensibility, reflecting the composer’s close connection with Debussy.
