Composed in 1973 by Toru Takemitsu, one of Japan's greatest composers who transcended the boundaries of contemporary music and challenged composers of various experimental orientations. Performed by the Tokyo Gakusho. As Takemitsu himself states in his commentary, "There is no other medium better suited than Gagaku to examine time, which is closely related to tone color, as well as issues of tempo and duration, and the spatial transformation of color. The work is a wonderful example of Gagaku's unique sense of fluctuation and suspension, in which the time axis progresses according to the performer's breathing alone. As in the soundtrack to "The Tale of Genji" for which Haruomi Hosono composed the music, the definition of ambient has long since collapsed, and we are now swallowed up by the heterogeneity of folk/traditional music.
