Adapted from a historical novel by Yasushi Inoue, the film depicts the fate of monks who traveled to China on a ship during the Tenpyo period in the first half of the 8th century when Emperor Shomu was on the throne. This is one of a masterpiece among Takemitsu's many film scores. 17 pieces in all, but you can appreciate the scale of the music by listening to the whole album at once.
