A landmark 1975 album from British musician Brian Eno, who first came to prominence as a member of Roxy Music, released on his own Obscure label. Side A features a long-form piece recorded in his own studio, created through a distinctly hands-on process: synthesizer sounds routed through a digital recall system, processed with EQ and echo units, then sent to an open-reel tape recorder, with the signal further looped through a second machine to generate delay before being recorded back. Side B presents a three-part suite performed by The Cockpit Ensemble under the direction of Gavin Bryars. Both sides exemplify Eno’s early experimental approach, drawing inspiration from Erik Satie’s concept of “furniture music” and pointing toward the definition of music as an element of the urban environment—an essential precursor to his later Ambient series.
