This is a masterpiece 2-vinyl album released in 1975, containing 9 original pieces composed in the 1960s and 1970s by Hozan Yamamoto, a shakuhachi player of the Tozan school, who constantly took on new challenges, not only in classical music but also in jazz, contemporary music and avant-garde, and was awarded the title of living national treasure in 2002. This is the state of affairs that he arrived at while continuing to suffer in the old-fashioned Japanese music world. The program features Katsuya Yokoyama, Shinichi Yuize, Tadao Sawai, and many other players who have challenged the boundaries of classical music and taken on new areas of traditional Japanese music, and it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the endless, organic ensemble of shakuhachi and koto all at once, without feeling at all old-fashioned. In particular, I think the shakuhachi ensemble on Disc 1 is very easy to listen to. This is the world that can be seen beyond the ambient.

A1: 尺八四重奏曲大一番
