A 1987 album by the Kronos Quartet, the internationally acclaimed string quartet known for its interpretations of works by Steve Reich and many other contemporary composers. The group features David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Joan Jeanrenaud (cello). As with much of their work, the album reaches far beyond the boundaries of contemporary and modern classical music, taking on material from a wide range of genres through highly imaginative arrangements. Particular attention should be given to A3, an extended piece composed by Jon Hassell specifically for the Kronos Quartet. Despite the sharp attack and physical presence of the strings, the piece retains the distinctive floating, atmospheric quality associated with Hassell’s music, resulting in a fascinating combination. Also recommended are the minimalist-inflected A1, a cover of an Ornette Coleman composition on A4, and B1, whose pentatonic harmonies create an especially beautiful atmosphere with a subtle Japanese sensibility.
