Original soundtrack album for the French-Japanese co-production of the historical film Ran, directed by Akira Kurosawa and released in 1985. The music is by Toru Takemitsu, one of Japan's greatest composers, who transcended the boundaries of contemporary music and took on composers with a variety of experimental orientations. Performed by the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Hiroyuki Iwashiro and the internationally renowned transverse flute player Hiroyuki Koinuma. The film opens with the wildly dancing shinobue flute, and the unique Takemitsu worldview, which develops dramatically with tone clusters and shadowy orchestration, is also very prominent in this work, and the spectacular way in which it colours the images is nothing short of brilliant. In fact, the piece seems to be divided into smaller pieces, but the LP contains it as a full-length piece, and the shinobue flute part is particularly memorable.
