A 5-LP box set featuring the original soundtracks of award-winning films from the Mainichi Film Concours, held from 1946 to 1967 and organized by the Mainichi Shimbun. Supervised by Kuniharu Akiyama, renowned for his work conducting contemporary Japanese music, this collection includes a total of 30 film scores composed by some of Japan’s most iconic modern and contemporary composers. It spans from pre-war masters such as Fumio Hayasaka, Ichirō Saitō, Yasushi Akutagawa, Ikuma Dan, Akira Ifukube, Tadashi Kinoshita, and Masaru Satō, to post-war pioneers like Tōru Takemitsu, Toshirō Mayuzumi, and Hikaru Hayashi. This remarkable compilation offers a comprehensive look at Japan’s film music history. Particularly noteworthy is the inclusion of the soundtrack from Mozu, directed by Minoru Shibuya, with music composed by Takemitsu—an exceptionally rare and valuable recording. Highly recommended.
