This is a 1984 album by Anne-Marie Nzie, known as the Queen of Bikutsi, a style of Cameroonian music that evolved from the traditional styles of the Beti and Ewondo people around the city of Yaoundé. On track A1, Nzie delivers gospel-like vocals over a reggae-influenced rhythm with spoken word elements. Tracks A2, B1, and B3 feature a high-energy style akin to soukous, which originated in neighboring Congo (Zaire), while B2 evokes Congolese rumba, also rooted in Congo. This album presents an intriguing blend of digitized sound, with heavy use of synthesizers and drum machines, perfectly paired with Nzie’s husky, distinct low voice.
