In 1958, he joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1965, along with American pianist Stephen Pruslin and Harrison Birtwistle, he formed the Pierrot Players (later known as Fires of London). This album, released in 1984, was a vigorous collaboration with the British clarinetist Alan Hacker, who became hemiplegic in 1966 but continued to work energetically. They performed scores by Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Cage, Harrison Birtwistle, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Alban Berg, Peter Maxwell Davies, Corey Field, and Luang Prdit Phiroe, featuring clarinet solos and duets with Karen Evans on the piano. A2's "Sonata for Clarinet" is one of Cage's earliest works. A1, based on English folk melodies by Williams, is serene and very beautiful.
