This album was released in 1965 by Albert Ayler, an American saxophonist who made his name as the spearhead of avant-garde jazz in New York in the 1960s. The quintet, which included his brother Donald Ayler (tp), Charles Tyler (sax), Lewis Worell (b), and Sunny Murray (per), recorded this album live at Town Hall in New York City in the same year. The contrast between the early jazz-format theme and free improvisation is very characteristic, and the development is tremendous as the quintet quickly plunges into furious improvisation with the use of vibrato. This is an orientation that feels deeply sympathetic to the Art Ensemble of Chicago and its members' solos, Don Cherry, and others. This is an important recording that suggested the direction of avant-jazz afterwards. The sound is recorded on one side only, and the pulse sound is engraved on the B side for a long time.
