This is a 1984 leader album by German wind player Alfred Harth, who organized the free improvisation group Just Music in 1967 and released his work on ECM in 1970. This is a work of a shifting quintet featuring Paul Bley (p), Trilok Gurtu (per), Maggie Nicols (voice), and Barre Phillips (b), all of whom you can be sure just by looking at their names. Although the members of this group may remind one of free improvisation, this is a performance rooted in the score, and it is avant-contemporary jazz with a very rare sense of romanticism that coexists with an air of decadence as cold as concrete and graceful. Maggie Nicols' vocals further accentuate the contours of the piece. Highly recommended. This it the original German pressing.
