A 1982 release by Alhaji (Chief) Sikiru Ayinde Barrister And His Supreme Fuji Commanders, the large ensemble led by Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, one of the defining figures of Yoruba-language music in Nigeria, who issued an enormous body of work under various names from the 1960s onward. Taking its title from the well-known Yoruba saying “Ise Logun Ise”—roughly, “work is the medicine for poverty”—this is a key document of Fuji, the music style Ayinde himself originated. The album beautifully balances the ethical worldview of Yoruba society with a deeply rooted, archetypal Fuji sound: cyclical grooves built from densely layered, repeating percussion patterns centered on the talking drum, and powerful vocal-and-chorus interplay shaped through call and response.
