The American Composers Orchestra, organized in 1975 by American composer Francis Thorne and conductor Dennis Russell Davies, released this album in 1979. Recorded live at Alice Tully Hall in New York City in 1978, it features John Cage's 1947 composition "The Seasons" for ballet and Charles Wuorinen's orchestral score for American Composers Orchestra, commissioned by The National Endowment for the Arts. Side A, "The Seasons," was composed during Cage's period of deep study of Eastern thought, and is a lyrically rich composition with glimpses of Oriental tones that suggest a devotion to the traditional Indian aesthetic theory of nava rasa.
