An album released in 1985 by Amy Koïta, born into a Jali/Griot family in Mali, West Africa, and one of the most highly acclaimed female singers in Mali. This work falls between her simpler early recordings from the 1970s and her more modern recordings from 1988 onwards. It captures a period when the "more traditional instrumentation" and the "overwhelming vocal presence" beautifully intertwined. This is a truly wonderful masterpiece of Manding music, where Koïta's expressive vocals, with their rich and resonant timbre, soar over the mellow beats of percussion instruments like the balafon and ngoni, and the intricate melodies of the kora and violin. Highly recommended.
