An album featuring works by Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg, a leading figure of the Second Viennese School who is regarded as a pioneer in the development from late Romanticism to atonal music and the founder of the twelve-tone technique. Side A features Variations for Orchestra, performed by the Sinfonie-Orchester des Südwestfunks, Baden-Baden, conducted by Hans Rosbaud. Side B contains Variations for Organ, performed by Gerd Zacher. Both pieces reflect Schoenberg’s bold attempts to bridge the gap between tonality and atonality, leading toward his twelve-tone method — though the music is exceptionally challenging and complex.

A: Variationen uber ein Rezitativ fur Orgel op. 40
B: Variationen fur Orchester op. 31
