This is the 1959 album by The Jazz Messengers, a group formed by the legendary American drummer Art Blakey in the late 1950s, which remained active for 35 years, showcasing numerous remarkable performances. Representing a prominent figure in the American jazz scene, Blakey assembled a quintet featuring Lee Morgan (trumpet), Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone), Bobby Timmons (piano), and Jymie Merritt (bass). The album, their debut release, captures live recordings from a performance held at the prestigious jazz club Birdland in New York City in April of the same year. While relatively orthodox in its hard bop style, the album features impressive performances such as the swiftly unfolding A2 track, which transitions from aggressive drum solos to memorable themes, and the stylish B1 track with its dynamic trumpet and saxophone solos. This album offers a consistent display of excellence. This is a Japanese reissue in 1991 as part of the "Blue Note The 4000 Series Collection" by Toshiba EMI.
