This is the split album by The 7-Tette led by trumpeter Bill Dixon, who has been active with Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra since the 1960s as the vanguard of avant-jazz, and the gems of The New York Contemporary 5 led by Archie Shepp, who along with John Coltrane and Cecil Tayler, have produced many African-inspired jazz masterpieces. Bill Dixon 7-Tette on the A-side features 1Georgr Barrow, Ken McIntyre, Howard Johnson, Dave Izenson, Hal Dodson and Howard McRae. It has an excellent mysterious atmosphere with a somewhat oriental feel. B-side The New York Contemporary 5 features core members Don Cherry and John Tchicai, plus Ronnie Boykins, Sonny Murray and guest Ted Curson. Don Cherry-penned B3 was the first track recorded for this album and has remained the group's main repertoire ever since. It is also good to hear bassist Ronnie Boykins, who was at the core of Sun Ra Arkestra and left his masterpiece on the ESP Disk in 1975. This is believed to be US reissue in 1972.
