Bola Sete, one of Brazil’s most celebrated guitarists, had been active on the front lines since the early 1950s, performing with a wide range of musicians from Dizzy Gillespie and Django Reinhardt to Oscar Moore of the Nat King Cole Trio. In 1985, under the production of George Winston, he released this album on Dancing Cat, a sub-label of Windham Hill. The record features only original pieces by Sete, all captured in a mere 90-minute recording session in 1982. For this work, he set aside the nylon-string guitar he had long favored, switching instead to a steel-string guitar. The result is a remarkable performance that weaves freeform interplay into classically rooted melodies. Whatever the broader critical reception may be, this is a work so boundlessly beautiful and lyrical that one cannot fully speak of Brazilian guitar music without it. The recording quality itself is exceptional. Sete passed away in 1987, and since no later works are known, this stands as his final album.
