An album released in 1956 on Atlantic by legendary American bassist Charles Mingus, who had been active since the early 1940s, leaving behind countless iconic performances and stories before passing away in 1979. This recording, made in New York that same year, features a quintet with Jackie McLean (alto sax), J.R. Monterose (tenor sax), Mal Waldron (piano), and Willie Jones (drums). The album showcases highly original post-bop for its time, including the title track A1, which opens with a striking theme, and the extended session B2, where Mingus delivers an incredible solo with his signature bouncing, full-bodied tone. This is the U.S. reissue released in 1981 as part of the Atlantic Jazzlore series, featuring updated artwork.
