Active since the 1960s and celebrated for his many works themed around Africa, South African jazz pianist and composer Dollar Brand (later known as Abdullah Ibrahim) released this album in 1979 on the German label Enja. Performed with Talib Qadr (ss, as, vo), Greg Brown (b), and John Betsch (ds), the quartet delivers exceptional performances ranging from free jazz with pentatonic melodies evoking an Islamic atmosphere to deeply moving solo piano passages by Brand. The highlight is A3, a spiritual Afro-jazz piece featuring Talib Qadr’s vocals and rich influences from South African folk traditions — a stunning, soulful expression of Brand’s musical roots. This is the U.S. edition, released in 1980 on Inner City, featuring artwork distinct from the original German pressing.
