American trumpeter Donald Ayler, who joined his brother, saxophonist Albert Ayler's group in the mid-1960s and participated in such historic shows as "Bells" and "Spirits Rejoice," performed in Florence, Italy, in 1981. The septet includes Abdul Rahim Mustafa (reeds), Anthony "Tony" Smith (p), Richard "Radu" Williams (b), Frank Doblekar(ts), John Davis(g), and Jerry Griffin(per). On side A, expresses itself in an orthodox bop style, while on side B while inheriting the orientation of his older brother Albert, who created free jazz by integrating early jazz and chaotic improvisation, suggests a return to the roots of African music and plunges into a spiritual world that echoes John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. It is the great performance.
