Influenced by soul singers such as Aretha Franklin, Esther Phillips—a singer from Texas, USA—began her career at the young age of 14. Her big break came in 1949 when she participated in an amateur contest at a club owned by Johnny Otis. In 1975, she released an album on the Kudu label, the soul imprint of Creed Taylor’s CTI Records. The album features numerous musicians active in the jazz and fusion scenes, including Joe Beck (guitar), Steve Khan (guitar), Randy Brecker (trumpet), Mike Brecker (tenor sax), Ralph MacDonald (percussion), and David Sanborn (alto sax). It includes a standout disco tune on track A1 with an uplifting beat and emotional development, as well as a full range of soul, blues, and R&B tracks that showcase Phillips’ rich, lustrous vocals and superb musical arrangements throughout. This edition was released in Japan in 1979 as part of King Records’ CTI=KUDU Original 1500 Series.
