Released in 1978 on Brian Eno's Obscure label, this album by Gavin Bryers is music for an opera by Tom Phillips, composed by Bryers using fragments of the novel and a few bars of notes printed on a 50 cm square piece of paper. Side A is minimalist music with a gradual progression of scales played by piano, keyboard percussion, and strings, and a collage of wave sounds, etc. Side B is long-toned strings overlaid with fragments of the novel sung by a vocalist. This is an important piece that makes us think about what is ambient? The commentary by Gavin Bryer on the insert was translated by Satoshi Ashikawa.
