American trumpeter Herb Robertson, who made his mark on the jazz scene with recordings alongside Mark Helias, Gerry Hemingway, and Dewey Redman—particularly on Split Image released via Enja—continues to be an active force to this day. This 1985 leader album features a quintet of seasoned players, including Bill Frisell (guitar), Tim Berne (alto saxophone), Lindsey Horner (bass), and Joey Baron (drums, percussion). Robertson’s playing style, influenced by legends like Don Cherry and Booker Little, blends seamlessly with the sophisticated New York jazz atmosphere of the era. The result is a deep soundscape that bridges contemporary jazz and free jazz, making this an underrated gem. Frisell's distinctive guitar work is particularly memorable.
