This 1988 album by Hetty Koes Endang, a leading female singer of Indonesia’s popular music genre Kroncong, showcases her distinctive style. Originally performed by string ensembles—featuring instruments such as the violin—introduced by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century, Kroncong evolved over time by absorbing various influences and transforming into a form of popular music. By the late 1980s, synthesizers had been widely incorporated, giving the genre a more modern pop feel. The result is a delightful blend of Southeast Asian melodies and Endang’s expressive vocals. The ballads are especially wonderful. Highly recommended.
