American saxophonist Jackie McLean, who emerged as a rising talent in his teens by performing with Kenny Drew and Sonny Rollins and recording with Miles Davis in 1951, released this album on New Jazz in 1958. After debuting as a leader with The New Tradition (1955) on Ad Lib, McLean went on to record numerous classics for Prestige and Blue Note. This album features a quartet with Mal Waldron (p), Paul Chambers (b), and Arthur Taylor (ds), with Red Garland (p) and Bill Hardman (tp) joining on three tracks. While McLean’s bright alto saxophone shines against the solid rhythm section, Hardman’s trumpet is particularly striking and truly outstanding.
