Active since the 1960s and heard on countless landmark jazz-rock recordings, Dutch pianist Jasper Van’t Hof—also known for the superb 1987 collaboration Fifth of May with Archie Shepp—launched Pili Pili in the mid-1980s as a project exploring a stronger world music direction. This is the group’s third album, released in 1987. Blending heavily synthesized electronics in a vein reminiscent of Wally Badarou with African musical elements, the sound is both primitive and highly danceable. Van’t Hof’s bright, expressive piano—backed by the formidable technique he brings as a jazz pianist—cuts through beautifully and adds a deeply emotional edge throughout.
