This album was released in 1987 by John Adams, an American minimalist who has been active from the mid-1970s to the 2000s, and has left many masterpieces in a wide range of styles from modern classical to experimental/electronic, and has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music. The San Francisco Symphony, under the direction of Edo de Waart, performs on this album, as they did on "Shaker Loops" released in 1984 in a coupling with Steve Reich. The minimalist yet dramatic development with waves of melodies is the essence of John Adams' minimalist orchestration, and is a wonderful experience. The San Francisco Symphony seems to be very good at playing this kind of music. I highly recommend this album. Highly recommended.
