This 1985 album features compositions by John Anthony Lennon, who was appointed assistant professor at the University of Tennessee in 1977 and continued composing while teaching, releasing works through publishers such as Columbia University Press and Dorn Publications; and Sheila Silver, known for her compositions influenced by non-Western musical traditions.
Side A features Silver’s String Quartet, performed by the Atlantic Strings Quartet, a group formed by core members of The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and joined by violinist Jennifer Johnson. Side B presents Lennon’s Voices for String Quartet, performed by the Kronos Quartet, internationally acclaimed for their interpretations of works by composers such as Steve Reich. Both pieces are fascinating examples of ensemble writing that tread the edge of atonality with remarkable balance.
