Kenny Barron
What If?
Enja Records (Germany) 1986
enja 5013 (LP) Original pressing, DMM

This is an album released in 1986 by Kenny Barron, an American pianist who emerged in the early 70's and has since demonstrated his talent in numerous leader albums and sessions. The quintet is composed of Cecil McBee, Wallace Roney (tp), John Stubblefield (ts), and Victor Lewis (ds). The quintet features original scores by the musicians themselves, as well as compositions by Charlie Parker and Thelonius Monk. Although the basic tone is orthodox modal jazz/hard bop, A1 and B3 showcase contemporary jazz with a very sophisticated air. In any case, this is an excellent work that offers smoldering playing backed by a deep spirituality. Original German pressing.
